Sony’s New IMX811 Sensor: What It Is and Why It Matters

Sony has announced the IMX811-AAMR, a cutting-edge rolling shutter CMOS image sensor designed to push the boundaries of high-resolution imaging. With a diagonal of 64.84 mm and a square pixel layout, this image sensor delivers a staggering 247 megapixels (with a pixel size of 2.81 um), with an effective resolution of 19,200 x 12,800 pixels, ranking it among the highest-resolution sensors available. This sensor is targeted toward advanced imaging applications where detail and precision matter most.

What the IMX811 Brings to the Table

The IMX811 is not just another incremental step in imaging- it represents a leap forward. With 247 megapixels of effective resolution and an all-pixel readout mode, the sensor delivers unprecedented clarity at a readout speed of 5.3 frames per second. Built on a back illuminated design, it ensures higher sensitivity and performance, even in demanding, low-light environments.

Among its standout features are:

  • All-pixel readout mode with support for various subsampling/binning options
  • Built-in CDS/PGA with up to +24 dB gain
  • 12-bit/14-bit/16-bit A/D converter on-chip
  • High-speed SLVS-EC output
  • AR-coated seal glass on both sides for reduced reflections

Why It Matters

For industries like flat panel inspection and semiconductor manufacturing, the IMX811 opens new possibilities. The combination of ultra-high resolution and reliable readout speeds makes it particularly well-suited for FA (factor automation) cameras that require both accuracy and speed in defect detection or quality assurance.

Beyond industrial use, the sensor’s back illuminated structure enhances light-gathering efficiency, which could influence future imaging developments in fields like scientific research, aerospace, and defense, where every photon counts.

The Bigger Picture

With the IMX811, Sony continues to lead in pushing sensor technology to the limits of resolution and speed. For system integrators and OEMs, this sensor is more than just an upgrade, it’s a pathway to next-generation imaging solutions where every detail matters.

At Vision Systems Technology, we’re excited about what the IMX811 means for our partners and customers. It’s a glimpse into the future of ultra-high resolution machine vision.
